Vietnamese growers expand dragon fruit acreage

In 2018 and in the first nine months of 2019, the prices of dragon fruit have always been at lower level in comparison with those in previous years.

The price has dropped drastically as dragon fruits have recently been somewhat neglected by Chinese market. However, although the price of dragon fruits continuously declines, farmers still grow and continue to expand the dragon fruit acreage.

In the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, in 2017, there were around 6,000 hectares of dragon fruit plants, concentrated in the Cho Gao District.

From 2018 to now, although the price of dragon fruits has continuously been dropping and investment costs are extremely high, many farming households still abandoned rice paddy fields, pineapple fields and fish ponds to switch to cultivate dragon fruit plants.

One explanation might be that the original shrimp farming and rice cultivation are quite chancy, whereas growing dragon fruit is more promising as growers are able to be more certain about profit and loss.

Still, this certainty only goes so far. sggpnews.org.vn mentions Le Minh Duc, director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Long An Province, saying that 80 percent of Vietnamese dragon fruits were exported to China. Every time consumption at this market is stagnant, dragon fruits are unsaleable.
